BAHAWALPUR: Five members of a family were killed and three others sustained injuries when a passenger coach crashed into a car in Hasilpur, a tehsil of Bahawalpur district, rescue officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to the Bahawalpur Rescue Control, the fatal crash took place on the Hasilpur-Chishtian Road when a Bahawalnagar-bound passenger coach rammed into an oncoming car carrying eight members of the same family.

The collision resulted in the deaths of five people and left three others injured.

Rescue teams reached the site after receiving the alert and shifted the injured to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Hasilpur.

Officials said three people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Initial findings suggest that the accident occurred due to speeding.

Road accidents are not uncommon in Pakistan and occur frequently due to various reasons, including driver negligence, road and weather conditions etc.

On July 5, at least six people were killed and 18 others injured when a passenger bus collided with a trailer in Muzaffargarh’s Langar Sarai area.

The passenger bus was travelling from Lahore to Ali Pur when it collided with a trailer, resulting in the death of six people.

Last month, at least 10 people were killed and dozens of others were wounded in separate road accidents in Ghotki, Dera Ismail Khan, Layyah and Chichawatni in a single day.

Three individuals lost their lives and more than eight were injured when a speeding truck overturned on Motorway M-5 near Sindh’s Ghotki.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday expelled five members of the National Assembly (MNAs) for voting against the party’s stance during the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

According to an official notification issued by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the party has terminated the basic membership of MNAs Aurangzeb Khan Khichi (NA-159, Vehari IV), Muhammad Ilyas Chaudhry (NA-62, Gujrat I), Mubarak Zeb, Usman Ali (NA-142, Sahiwal II), and Zahoor Hussain Qureshi (NA-146, Khanewal III).

PTI’s Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram also shared the termination notice on X, confirming the disciplinary action.

Sources said the lawmakers were accused of violating the party’s official policy during the National Assembly vote on the 26th Amendment, which was passed in October last year by both the National Assembly and the Senate.

In the declaration separately issued to the lawmakers, the former ruling party stated that the lawmakers had returned to the National Assembly from different constituencies with the support of and as a nominee of the PTI in the February 8 general polls last year.

They took their seats on the opposition benches as part of the PTI’s parliamentary party, with the oaths to stay loyal to the PTI, it added.

Addressing Khichi, it censured that the MNA had joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) parliamentary party and took up the office of Federal Minister [for National Heritage and Culture Division] and “hence liable to disqualification as well”.

The judiciary-oriented constitutional package proposed a set of constitutional amendments, including provisioning a fixed three-year term of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

The constitutional amendment had sailed through both houses in October last year amid the opposition’s protests which it called an attempt to suppress the judiciary.

President Asif Ali Zardari had signed the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill into law upon the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif following the approval of the said legislation by the parliament.

It also paved the way for the formation of a new constitutional bench.

The treasury benches, comprising 211 seats, required 224 votes in the NA. However, their numbers rose to 219 following the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) support.

The amendments were passed after the PTI-backed independent lawmakers including Zahoor, Aurangzeb Khichi, Usman Ali, and Mubarak Zeb voted in favour of the motion along with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Chaudhry Ilyas.

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday launched its anti-government campaign, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur arriving in Lahore to kick off the movement, saying that political drives starting from the city have historically resonated nationwide.

“We will take practical steps after consultation to move forward,” said Gandapur while addressing a key consultative session held at a farmhouse in Lahore’s Raiwind.

The KP chief minister said: “We must think about how to take it to its peak by August 5.”

His statement came after incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan ordered his party that the anti-government protest should “hit peak” on August 5 — the day when he completes two years in jail.

Responding to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s criticism of the PTI-led government in KP, CM Gandapur alleged that only one MNA and two MPAs from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) were elected on merit, while the rest won due to alleged manipulation of Form 47.

He went on to say that the JUI-F chief Fazl himself holds a “fake mandate” and questioned his authority to comment on PTI affairs.

Gandapur stated that the public had rejected Maulana Fazl and advised the JUI-F supremo to focus on bringing a change within his own party rather than in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Earlier today, Maulana Fazl said that if there is to be a change in KP, it should emerge from within PTI.

He added that JUI-F would make decisions regarding the province only after party consultation, noting that the province cannot afford further political instability.

Following the Supreme Court’s June 27 verdict — which ruled that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is ineligible for reserved seats — the opposition alliance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is now just 20 members short of forming a simple majority in the provincial assembly.

On a separate note, Gandapur said he would appreciate the Punjab government only when he is allowed to hold a public gathering in Lahore by his constitutional rights.

The firebrand politician also criticised the suspension of the PTI’s Punjab Assembly members, terming it “illegal”. Addressing a media interaction, Gandapur warned that if such actions continued, he could consider removing [the opposition’s] committee chairmen in his province.

The former ruling party has ramped up its efforts to launch a nationwide anti-government campaign following the orders of the jailed patron-in-chief.

A few days ago, ex-PM Khan’s sister Aleema Khan announced that the PTI founder would lead the protest from jail.

“Our family knows about the protest plan,” said Aleema; however, she remained tight-lipped about the details of the upcoming demonstration. She added that they would inform the media regarding the plan at an appropriate time.

She also launched a criticism against the party leadership, quoting Khan as saying that he was free in prison while they are imprisoned outside.

The protest route — whether it starts from Peshawar and proceeds to Lahore — will be decided and disclosed by the party, she added.

She also said that Khan’s entire family would participate in the upcoming protest. Khan had conveyed that those unable to carry the burden of the political movement should step aside, she added.

According to the PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram, the Imran Khan-led party will hold demonstrations in provinces and districts in the first phase.

To another query about CM Gandapur’s statement that he would carry weapons to the protest, Akram said Gandapur was talking about self-defence. “What the chief minister meant was that everybody has the right to self-defence,” he added.

The PTI spokesperson also said the PTI founder had directed Gandapur to lead the protest.
