Unai Emery Fastest to 100 Wins as Aston Villa Manager
Birmingham — Unai Emery has become the fastest manager in the history of Aston Villa to reach 100 victories, following his side’s win over Lille OSC in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last‑16 tie.
The Spanish coach achieved the milestone in 181 matches, reaching the mark quicker than any previous Villa manager.
Historic Milestone for Emery
Since his appointment in October 2022, Unai Emery has transformed Aston Villa into a competitive force in both domestic and European competitions.
The 54‑year‑old currently holds the highest win ratio in the club’s history at 55.2%. His achievement also places him among a small group of managers who have recorded 100 Premier League‑era victories during their time at the club.
Only Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta have recorded more wins during the same period in England’s top flight.
Surpassing Legendary Villa Managers
Emery’s achievement surpasses several historic figures in Aston Villa’s history.
Former manager Ron Saunders previously held the record. Saunders reached 100 victories during the 1977‑78 season, his fourth year in charge.
Saunders later guided Villa to the First Division title in 1980‑81 and laid the foundation for their European Cup triumph in 1982.
Another notable manager, Joe Mercer, needed more than four years to reach the same milestone during his spell at the club between 1958 and 1964.
Emery’s Redemption in England
Emery returned to English football with something to prove after leaving Arsenal in 2019.
Since taking charge at Villa Park, he has rebuilt the squad and guided the team back into European competition. His success reflects his strong reputation in continental tournaments, where he has already won the UEFA Europa League four times.
Confidence Boost After Difficult Run
The victory over Lille also came at an important time for Aston Villa. The team had endured a four‑match winless run in the Premier League, including defeats against Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Villa captain John McGinn said the result provided an important reset for the team.
“We needed a reset. The past month has not been great,” McGinn said after the match.
Focus on European Success
Aston Villa currently sit near the top of the Premier League table and continue to push for qualification to the UEFA Champions League.
Winning the Europa League would also secure a place in next season’s Champions League.
For Emery, the latest victory represents another step toward restoring Villa’s status as a major force in European football.
