Oman Replaces Pakistan at Junior Hockey World Cup

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed that Oman will replace Pakistan in the upcoming Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed that Oman will replace Pakistan in the upcoming Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2025, set to take place in India later this year. Pakistan withdrew from the tournament citing concerns over playing in India, prompting the FIH to invite the next eligible Asian team.

Oman Steps In After Pakistan Withdrawal

In an official announcement, the FIH stated that Oman, the next-best team from the Junior Asia Cup 2024, has been selected to take Pakistan’s slot in the tournament. The decision ensures that Asia retains full representation at the global event, scheduled to run from November 28 to December 10, 2025, in Chennai and Madurai, India.

According to the FIH statement, “We regret Pakistan’s decision to withdraw but are pleased to welcome Oman to the 2025 Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup. The tournament structure remains unchanged.”

    Why Pakistan Withdrew

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) recently informed the FIH that it would not participate in the tournament unless it was moved to a neutral venue. This stance followed the government’s advice against traveling to India due to diplomatic tensions and security concerns.

A PHF spokesperson said, “Pakistan’s players and officials were fully prepared to compete, but the decision was made in light of external factors beyond our control. We hope for more neutral venues in future international events.”

Oman’s First-Ever Junior World Cup Appearance

For Oman, this marks a historic first appearance at the Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup. The team’s inclusion is seen as a major step forward for hockey development in the Gulf region.
Oman Hockey Federation President Talib Al Wahaibi expressed gratitude, stating, “We thank the FIH for this opportunity. It is an honor for Oman to represent Asia alongside top hockey nations.”

Oman will now join India, Chile, and Switzerland in Group B of the tournament.

    Impact on Pakistan Hockey

Pakistan’s withdrawal from yet another major international competition has raised concerns about the nation’s global hockey standing and player development.
Former Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh said, “Our juniors are losing valuable international exposure. The PHF must find a way to ensure Pakistan remains competitive on the world stage.”

    Conclusion

With Oman officially replacing Pakistan, the 2025 Junior Hockey World Cup lineup is now complete. The development underscores the ongoing challenges facing Pakistan hockey amid political sensitivities but also opens doors for emerging teams like Oman to shine on the world stage.
