Breaking News: Sialkot Faces Severe Flood Emergency as India Releases Massive Water into Chenab River
SIALKOT: A major flood emergency has been declared in Sialkot as India released a massive flow of water into the Chenab River, creating a critical situation across several regions. According to the latest reports, extremely high flood levels are being recorded at Head Marala, where a staggering 696,534 cusecs of water is passing through, threatening thousands of families, homes, and farmlands.
The District Administration has issued high-alert warnings for all low-lying and river-adjacent areas, advising residents to immediately evacuate and move to safer locations. Emergency teams, rescue units, and relief organizations have been mobilized to deal with the worsening situation.
Dangerously High Water Levels Across Rivers and Streams
Authorities have confirmed alarming water levels in multiple rivers, canals, and streams connected to the Chenab basin:
- Chenab River: 696,534 cusecs — Extremely High Flood
- Jammu Tawi River: 53,199 cusecs — High Flood Level
- Manawar Tawi: 15,429 cusecs — Low Flood Level
- Nala Aik: 41,000 cusecs — High Flood Level
- Nala Palkhu: 3,594 cusecs — High Flood Level
- Nala Bhed: 2,950 cusecs — Moderate Flood
These dangerously high flows are putting enormous pressure on riverbanks, bridges, and surrounding villages, increasing the risk of widespread destruction.
District Administration Issues Urgent Evacuation Orders
The Sialkot District Administration has instructed residents of Bajwat, Pasrur, Narowal, and nearby flood-prone areas to move immediately to government-designated relief camps. Authorities have strongly advised against crossing flooded roads, bridges, and riverbanks due to the rapid rise in water levels.
Rescue 1122 teams, Pakistan Army units, and civil defense personnel are conducting search and evacuation operations in the most affected regions. Boats and emergency vehicles have been deployed to relocate stranded families to safer areas.
High Risk for Villages, Roads, and Farmlands
Officials have warned that if water levels in the Chenab River continue to rise, dozens of villages, farmlands, and residential areas could be completely submerged. Reports suggest that several link roads connecting Sialkot, Wazirabad, and Gujrat are already partially damaged due to continuous flooding, creating major challenges for rescue operations.
Local farmers have also been advised to remove livestock and safeguard agricultural equipment as large areas of cultivated land are at immediate risk of inundation.
Relief Camps and Emergency Response Activated
The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), in coordination with the district government, has established multiple relief camps in Sialkot and adjoining areas to accommodate displaced families. These camps are providing:
- Safe shelter and bedding for flood-affected families
- Free medical aid and essential medicines
- Clean drinking water and food supplies
- Emergency transportation for stranded residents
Authorities have also deployed water pumps and heavy machinery at critical locations to manage water flow and minimize infrastructure damage.
Authorities on High Alert
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that additional inflows from Indian dams could further worsen the flood situation in the coming hours. Continuous monitoring of Chenab River, Jammu Tawi, and connecting nullahs is underway, and updates will be provided as the situation develops.
Residents are strongly advised to stay alert, follow official safety instructions, and keep track of updates from the district administration and rescue authorities.
