At the 95th Academy Awards, the German anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front and the Irish black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin both received nine nominations, while the sci-fi family drama Everything, Everywhere, All at Once received eleven.
Several of the categories announced during Tuesday’s broadcast programme in Los Angeles, California made history.
Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick are the first sequels to be nominated for best picture. Starring in the genre-bending film Everything, Everywhere, at Once, Michelle Yeoh of Malaysia became only the second Asian woman since the awards’ inception in 1929 to be nominated for best actress.
While Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler were both widely anticipated to be nominated for their performances in The Woman King and Till, respectively, neither actress was included in the best actress category, drawing criticism from some.
There has been active campaign over the past few years to broaden the awards’ scope, so this snub is particularly troubling.
Angela Bassett, in her role as the film’s supporting actress, made history when she was nominated for an Academy Award. This was the first time a superhero film from Marvel Studios has ever received an acting nomination.
Naatu Naatu, from the Indian film RRR (subtitled in Telegu), was the first song from an entirely Indian production to be nominated for the coveted award. The film chronicled the resistance efforts of two Indian rebels against British colonial rule.
The list of nominees for the most important awards is below. On March 12th, the winners will be revealed.
