The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a final notice to unregistered social media firms operating in the country, urging them to register and help in banning immoral and illegal content, including blasphemy.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and the commerce ministry have all been urged to take action against these businesses after the authority’s declaration.
Companies and organisations have been asked by the PTA to verify the legal standing of social media firms before working with them, and to sever ties with those that are not properly licenced to do so.
The authorities has voiced its displeasure with the corporations’ refusal to cooperate on such a delicate matter.
The PTA has issued a warning, saying that companies that defy government orders in Pakistan risk being shut down, and that fines would be enforced against unregistered companies under social media laws.
