ECP Confirms LG Polls In Karachi And Hyderabad Would Be Held On January 15

Local bodies elections in Karachi and Hyderabad will proceed as planned on January 15 after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday dismissed a request from the Sindh government to delay the second phase of LG polls in Sindh.

With only two days notice, the Sindh government decided late Thursday night to push back the local government elections in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Dadu from their original date of January 15 due to concerns raised by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).

An important ECP meeting, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, has decided to proceed with the LG elections as planned.

The ECP has rejected a statement and request from the Sindh government and instead ordered the Interior Ministry to guarantee that the Rangers and the Army are deployed at highly sensitive polling stations in Karachi and Hyderabad.

In light of the ECP ruling, the Sindh government has called an emergency meeting of its legal team to discuss next steps in response to the ECP directive. A report from the chief secretary and the secretary of the local body has been requested by the government.
