On Tuesday, the federal cabinet approved a price cut of up to 30% for 20 commonly used medications.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting of the federal cabinet held in Islamabad and presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The PTI, according to the government, increased drug costs by up to 700% during its rule.
The pricing of 54 more medications was also agreed by the cabinet, Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel said in a statement. According to him, these drugs are used to treat cancer and other long-term conditions.
It is the government’s primary responsibility to make sure that people have access to the medications they need, he added, and the present government is dedicated to helping them do so.
