England And The United States Go To The Quarterfinals, While Iran And Wales Are Eliminated

Both Iran and Wales were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2022 after suffering losses at the hands of the United States and England, respectively. As a result of their victories, the United States and England advanced to the Round of 16.

After a resounding 3-0 victory against their Welsh opponents, England won Group B with seven points and advanced to the Round of 16.

Another convincing opening-round victory propelled Gareth Southgate’s squad to the top of Group B behind the play of Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden.

In the first half, Wales successfully shut down the English offence and kept the scoreboard blank.

But after halftime, England rallied and increased their dominance over Wales, and they were rewarded only five minutes in when Rashford scored to give England the lead for good.

In the next few seconds, England’s Foden extended their advantage, putting the game out of Wales’ reach.

Again, Rashford added to Wales’ sorrow as their comeback to the World Cup for the first time since 1958 ended in disappointment.

On Monday, one of the tournament favourites, England, will play the runner-up in Group A, Senegal.

In the other game in Group B, bitter rivals Iran and the United States played a thrilling match, with the eventual winner coming from a goal scored by Christian Pulisic in the first half.

USA dominated Iran from the opening whistle and took the lead when Sergino Dest headed the ball to Pulisic, who made no mistake in beating Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

U.S.A.’s five points in Group B were second only to England’s seven, while Iran’s three were good enough for third.

The U.S. has a formidable challenge on Saturday when they face the eventual champions of Group A, the Netherlands, in the round of 16.
