- Sundowns salvage a draw after goalkeeper’s error Mamelodi Sundowns FC, who won their sixth straight South African Premiership title on April 1, were held by mid-table Golden Arrows FC in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday. The champions had to come from behind after a blunder by their goalkeeper Denis Onyango gifted Arrows the lead in the 58th minute.
Onyango, who is also the captain of Uganda, misjudged a long ball from Arrows defender Nkosinathi Sibisi and let it bounce over his head into the net. The goal stunned Sundowns, who had dominated the first half but failed to score.
Sundowns equalized in the 76th minute when substitute Kermit Erasmus scored with a low shot from inside the box after a pass from Themba Zwane. Erasmus, who joined Sundowns from Cape Town City in January, has scored six goals in 12 league appearances for his new club.
The draw extended Sundowns’ unbeaten run in the league to 20 matches, but reduced their lead at the top of the table to seven points over second-placed AmaZulu FC, who have a game in hand. Arrows remained in fourth place, 12 points behind Sundowns.
Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi praised his team’s resilience after the match and said that Onyango’s mistake was a rare occurrence. He said that his team will focus on their next match against Orlando Pirates on Sunday.
